Oat Futures Break $4 as Canadian Production Falls Nearly 20%
Oat futures climbed nearly $1 this week, breaking $4 resistance for the first time in two years as Canadian production fell nearly 20% and U.S. ending stocks stay historically tight.
Market notes
- Oat futures rose nearly $1 per bushel this week
- Futures broke above $4 resistance for the first time in two years
- Canadian oat production fell nearly 20%

Oat futures climbed nearly $1 per bushel this week, breaking through the $4 resistance level for the first time in two years as Canadian production dropped nearly 20%.
The rally reflects two converging supply pressures. Canadian oat output — the anchor of North American supply — fell close to 20% in the latest crop year, trimming exportable surplus at a time when U.S. ending stocks already sit at historically tight levels.
The $4 mark had held as a ceiling for two years. Futures pushed past it this week, adding nearly $1 in value and signaling that buyers may need to pay up to secure coverage through the coming months.
For U.S. growers, the move matters directly for margins. Tighter Canadian supply tends to shift demand toward domestic oats, strengthening basis in regions where millers and end users compete for limited bushels. Growers with unpriced 2024 crop in the bin now face a pricing decision against a market that has already broken a multi-year resistance level.
The supply picture also carries input-cost implications for livestock feeders, who use oats in rations, and for food processors sourcing milling-quality oats. A smaller Canadian crop reduces the pool of high-quality milling supply available for import into the U.S. market.
Traders will watch whether the breakout holds. Sustained prices above $4 would mark a structural shift from the range that has capped the market since 2023, while a failure at these levels would suggest the production decline was already priced in.
