USDA: Broiler Egg Sets Jump 2.535 Million in Latest Week
USDA counted 249.839 million broiler eggs in incubators, up 2.535 million weekly and 3% year over year, as easing heat improved lay rates and the breeder flock expanded.
Market notes
- 249.839 million broiler-type eggs set into incubation, up 2.535 million on the week
- Sets rose 3% year over year on a larger laying hen population
- Easing high temperatures improved laying efficiency
USDA's latest weekly hatchery report shows 249.839 million broiler-type eggs set into incubation, up 2.535 million from the prior week and 3% above the same week a year earlier.
The weekly gain reflects improving laying efficiency as high temperatures in some production areas continue to ease. The year-over-year increase stems from an overall larger number of laying hens in the broiler breeder flock.
For poultry integrators and hatcheries, the set numbers point to a firm chick supply pipeline heading into late-year placements. The data track eggs set during the week under review; they are an indicator of future meat supplies, not harvested results, and subsequent hatch rates will determine how many of those eggs translate into placed birds.
The report also noted that placements of broiler-type chicks were generally up over the past week, consistent with the larger incubated egg sets.
The USDA collects the figures through its weekly hatchery survey, and the reporting window covers the seven-day period reflected in the release. Analysts typically watch the set and placement series alongside breeder flock numbers and hatch rates to gauge the direction of broiler meat production months ahead.
With heat stress receding as a drag on lay rates and the breeder herd running larger than last year, hatchery throughput should remain supportive of higher chick placements in the coming weeks, assuming hatch percentages hold steady.
