BRANDT has acquired 100% of the shares of Agrícola Innovación, S.A. de C.V., the Mexico City- and Pachuca-based specialty input maker known as Altiara, in a deal that gives the Tampa, Florida company its first manufacturing base inside Mexico. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The acquisition, announced without financial terms, adds manufacturing capacity, a new customer base, and a wider doorway into organic and biological product markets across Latin America. BRANDT, a global manufacturer of specialty agricultural products that also operates as a U.S. agricultural retailer, said the deal will let it produce in Mexico and ship throughout the region.

What does the deal change for BRANDT's supply chain?

The logistics argument is central. Rick Brandt, president and CEO of BRANDT, said in a statement: "We continue to grow globally and expand our market reach. With Altiara in the family, we'll be able to manufacture our products in Mexico for shipment throughout Latin America, delivering significant efficiencies in Central America and the Caribbean."

He added: "We're thrilled to welcome Altiara into BRANDT… This is just another way to better serve our customers."

For input buyers in Central America and the Caribbean, Mexican production shortens supply lines that currently run from U.S. plants. The company framed those efficiencies, rather than any disclosed cost saving, as the deal's financial logic.

Who is Altiara and what does it make?

Founded in 2000, Altiara manufactures, distributes and sells:

  • specialty crop nutrition products
  • OMRI-listed bio-solutions
  • plant protection products
  • agricultural adjuvants
  • chemistries for crop nutrition, protection and biostimulation, spanning organic, biorational and conventional lines

Altiara products are distributed primarily in Mexico and Central America. The OMRI-listed portfolio is the piece that broadens BRANDT's reach into certified-organic and biological input markets.

Why Mexico, and why now?

Mauricio Andrião, vice president of BRANDT International, will run the acquired business within his unit. He said the country was targeted deliberately.

"Last year, we identified Mexico as one of our primary growth countries for its deep agriculture segment, fit with our high-technology products and overall potential," Andrião explained. "So when the opportunity came up to acquire Altiara, we were immediately interested. When we learned about the quality of their team, the quality of their products and their values-based approach to business, the fit was immediately obvious."

What happens to Altiara's staff and brand?

Francisco Ortiz, former CEO of Altiara, stays on as managing director of Mexico integration. "We are thrilled to be joining the BRANDT family," Ortiz said. "Our goal was to find a partner who shared our values, boasts a laser-sharp focus on customers and has the capacity to invest for growth. That's BRANDT. Our whole team is energized and excited."

All Altiara employees will be retained, with company leaders reporting to their functional counterparts at BRANDT. The business will be rebranded as "Altiara, A BRANDT Company" and operate under BRANDT International.

No purchase price, revenue figures, or plant capacity numbers were disclosed, so the deal's scale cannot yet be measured against BRANDT's existing international operations. Watch for the rebranded unit's first distribution moves in Central America and the Caribbean, where the company says Mexican manufacturing will deliver its clearest efficiencies.
