Central Nebraska farmer Clay Govier says excessive rainfall has brought corn and soybean harvest to a standstill in the state.
"Progress has pretty much come to a standstill," Govier told Brownfield. "I think that's going to be the case for at least another week."
Govier reports widespread stalk quality issues in the corn crop, a concern that compounds the delay because weakened stalks raise the risk of lodging and field losses the longer crop stands in wet conditions.
"The soybeans are standing pretty good," he said, offering a relative bright spot even as wet fields keep combines out of the rows.
The pause in harvest activity leaves Nebraska growers watching the calendar as moisture keeps equipment parked. Stalk integrity problems in corn add urgency to the situation: delayed harvest increases the potential for ear drop and downed plants, which can trim recoverable yield even when bushels ultimately make it to the bin.
For now, the state's corn and soybean harvest waits on drier weather, with Govier expecting at least another week before fieldwork resumes at a meaningful pace.
