Market notes

  • General Mills named Dana McNabb CEO effective January 1, 2027.
  • McNabb succeeds outgoing CEO Jeff Harmening, who will depart December 31, 2026.
  • Joel Leftwich will join Idealyst Innovation as executive vice president of policy innovation.
  • Leftwich will also direct the Center for American Food Power, a unit within Idealyst.
  • Robert Haus has joined Vylor as state government and industry affairs leader.

General Mills has named Dana McNabb as its next chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2027. She succeeds Jeff Harmening at the packaged food maker.

The transition gives General Mills nearly a year to complete the formal handover, a timeframe consistent with standard succession calendars at large publicly traded food companies.

Two Washington policy operatives also took new posts this week.

Joel Leftwich will join Idealyst Innovation as executive vice president of policy innovation. He will also direct the Center for American Food Power, a policy unit housed within Idealyst.

What does the new role cover?

Idealyst bills the executive vice president of policy innovation role as pairing federal lobbying oversight with direction of the Center for American Food Power. The center's remit covers policy coordination across food, agriculture and energy clients, the firm indicated.

The dual title places one senior leader over both federal policy work and a dedicated advocacy unit, suggesting Idealyst is integrating public affairs and lobbying under a single portfolio.

Robert Haus has joined Vylor as state government and industry affairs leader. His portfolio covers state-level legislative engagement and industry coalition work across the agricultural input supply chain.

How will Vylor deploy Haus?

Vylor is a strategic communications and public affairs firm serving food, agriculture and energy clients. Haus will lead the firm's state government and industry affairs capacity on issues ranging from pesticide labeling to right-to-farm debates landing in state capitols across the country.

The hire extends Vylor's footprint in state-level public affairs at a moment when pesticide, fertilizer and biotechnology policy increasingly lands with state agencies, attorneys general and legislatures rather than Congress alone. Statehouses have absorbed a growing share of right-to-farm, dicamba, glyphosate and climate disclosure rule-making over the past several legislative cycles.

What does the McNabb transition mean?

McNabb's elevation to CEO triggers an orderly leadership transition at General Mills. Harmening will continue in the role through December 31, 2026, handing the corner office to McNabb the next day.

General Mills shareholders will get their first look at the new CEO through the company's next quarterly earnings call, annual report and investor day. Analysts will track McNabb's first public comments on long-range priorities, capital allocation and any refinements to the company's brand portfolio.

The 12-month runway between announcement and effective date is a standard window for chief executive transitions at large food and beverage companies, allowing McNabb time to review segment strategies, retailer relationships and the cost-out programs underway before the formal handover.

Why do the moves cluster?

All three personnel shifts move senior executive and policy talent between trade associations, food and chemical companies, and policy-driven firms. The director title at the Center for American Food Power signals investment in advocacy capacity, while Vylor's hire reflects continued demand for state-level public affairs expertise.

The cluster also lands months before Congress resumes farm bill reauthorization work and dozens of state legislatures convene in early 2026, sharpening the value of experienced policy talent moving into new posts. The same week, fresh advocacy capacity is being built at Idealyst while General Mills locks in its next leader, both moves timed to the next phase of the federal policy calendar.

General Mills' next quarterly earnings call will give McNabb her first formal check-in with investors following the announcement, with the full leadership transition then closing on January 1, 2027, when Harmening exits the role.
